Everyone needs a forehead kiss and a grilled cheese

October was interesting, to say the least, from anticipating the election to my very first Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities meeting. I was able to witness firsthand the impact of advocacy and policy-making on individuals with disabilities, which was both eye-opening and growth-inducing. It was inspiring to see the power of community involvement and the potential for positive change in our society. It was a month filled with learning experiences and new perspectives that will undoubtedly shape my future involvement in disability rights activism. Overall, October was a month of personal and professional growth as I navigated the complexities of disability advocacy. The connections I made and the knowledge I gained will continue to motivate me to create a more inclusive and equitable society for all. The greatest thing that surprised me was that I know who I am, outside and inside of my natural habitat. I was able to be the same person that I am in my own community in my daily life. This realization has given me a newfound sense of confidence and authenticity in my advocacy work. My community at home went with me in spirit; I am who I am because of them. Their support and encouragement have shaped me into the advocate I am today, and I am grateful for their unwavering belief in me. Even when I felt like I was standing alone against the tide, their presence in my heart gave me the strength to keep fighting for what I believe in. I am determined to honor their support by making a meaningful impact in the world through my advocacy efforts.

As I was settling back at home, election night crept up like a rip current. Though the outcomes were shocking and earth shaking, they serve as a reminder of the resilience that those who have supported me have always instilled in me. Their belief in me fuels my determination to continue fighting for change, no matter the obstacles that may come my way. As I have said a few times this week, we are resilient; we are strong and persistent people that will continue to fight with passion no matter what the circumstances are. Together, we will overcome any challenges that come our way and continue to advocate for a more inclusive and accessible world. Our collective strength and determination will ensure that our voices are heard and our rights are respected.

These current events have confirmed my strong belief that what the world needs right now is a grilled cheese and a forehead kiss, because sometimes comfort and love are the best ways to recharge and keep pushing forward. Remember to take care of yourselves and each other as we navigate through these challenging times. Support and uplift each other; spread love and kindness in a world that can often feel chaotic.
